Other Events

  Aside from our always engaging monthly Flywheel Reading Series, filling Station often schedules other special events such as magazine launches, community engagement activities, or educational activities. We like to create unique events as well as participate in events other established arts events, cooperating with other local groups and organizations. We love delivering the unexpected just as we do in our pages. For example, in 2009, we brought poetry to Calgary Folk Music Festival for the first time, and hosted our biggest Blow-Out Festival ever at the Arrata Opera Centre featuring cutting-edge literature and including theatre and amazing local indie bands. In 2010, we hosted an event as part of the amazing Sled Island Music Festival called Poetry Ocean putting six poets from three community groups (Single Onion, Dandelion Magazine, and filling Station) on stage at once, and we ran a fun workshop upstairs at Market Collective around Christmas. For three years, we participated in One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo Midway. In early 2011, we participated in the Single Onion Lecture Series with a theatrical cross-over event called Visual Poetry On Trial.

August 2011 brought an amazing new festival called People's Poetry Festival, emphasizing and celebrating local talent, including that of the attendees. Taking place both in and out of doors in Kensington and also online through activities on Twitter and Facebook, it included lots of interaction and audience participation. filling Station was among the organizers.
